This amazes me that these people would be so devoted to their jobs that they would keep working so long without any pay. I wonder what they were living on and how their families got by. What is particularly interesting here is that in our current economic hard times police and fire are groups that political leaders exempt from wage cuts and job reductions because they say they are so necessary while other important groups such as teachers, and public health nurses are not considered to be as valuable.
